What to expect in Gymnastics Class Class from start to finish:
• Opening Circle- this is the “official” start of class each week where we come together quickly to learn each others name, introduce new kids or visitors & often discuss something we will be working on in class. This part of class is to get kids oriented to the group. Our goal is to create a positive social experience for everyone at the start of class.
• Warm-Up- this is where we get to RUN! We work on locomotor skills and basic gymnastics all around the gym. It’s an opportunity to get on bars, beam & tumbling floor and not just get going and warm-up our muscles but to review core skills on apparatus so that when we go to obstacle courses later, we can move on to more difficult skills. This is also a good way for our instructors to keep weekly tabs on the skill growth of gymnasts on all the equipment.
• Stretching- we always stretch to be sure our muscles are ready for more difficult skills. We stretch all major muscle groups to ensure safety and add a few strength skills so instructors can monitor technique.
• Gymnastics Obstacle Courses - this part of class is for kids to work on skills throughout the obstacle courses. There is a beam course, a tumbling/vaulting course, and a bar course. The equipment gets changed around every week to add variety to the environment. The Instructor will demonstrate a “Skill of Focus” each week. Gymnasts will learn grow a skill of focus at each course then use the rest of the equipment to practice other basic skills. This way, kids don’t have to wait in lines to practice skills, there is a greater fitness component to the class since gymnasts are constantly moving, and they get individualized attention with the instructor at the Skill area of focus. o Skill of Focus- This is a skill in each of the obstacle courses that requires more spotting and where the instructor will stay and grow the skills. We rotate skills of focus so kids get to challenge themselves & practice a wide variety of things. If your child really wants to learn a Cartwheel, we will have it for a skill of focus about every 3-4 weeks, and kids learn a balance at each obstacle course.
• Game!- Games are a great well to teach social concepts, encourage listening and following directce it in the obstacle course every week. Skills are rotated sions, and wind down at the end of class. Many of our gymnasts think this is the BEST part of class!
